Services and Programs

Using evidence-based practices, Start Corporation offers a array of different programs for people with mental illness and physical disabilities.  The focus of many of these programs is to assist participants in increasing their quality of life, self-satisfaction, and independence.

Please browse through our current programs by clicking on the links to your right or scrolling down.

Adult Independant Living Skills (ILS):
ILS is a service-delivery model that provides comprehensive, locally based treatment to people with serious and persistent mental illnesses. Unlike other community-based programs, ILS is not a linkage or brokerage case-management program that connects individuals to mental health, housing, or rehabilitation agencies or services. Rather, it provides highly individualized services directly to consumers.Services are provided to participants in their own home and community.Referrals are made through Terrebonne, Lafourche, and St. Mary Mental Health Clinics. This program is funded through contract with the Office of Mental Health.

Drop-In Center:

Utilizing the Clubhouse Model, this program is a comprehensive and dynamic program of 'treatment' for people with severe and persistent mental illness. In contrast to traditional day-treatment models, clubhouse participants are called "members" (as opposed to "patients" or "clients") and treatment focuses on their strengths and abilities, not their illness. The clubhouse is unique in such that it is not a clinical program. All clinical aspects of the program have been removed so as to focus on the independence of the individual, rather than their illness. Additionally, all participation at the Opportunity Center is strictly on a voluntary basis.

As a summary of its philosophy, the Opportunity Center has adopted the Four Guaranteed Rights of Membership: (1.) A right place to come; (2.) A right to meaningful relationships; (3.) A right to meaningful work; (4.) A right to a place to return.

The members and staff of the Opportunity Center work side-by-side to manage all the operations of the clubhouse, providing an opportunity for members to contribute in significant and meaningful ways; therefore the Opportunity Center is run 'by the members, for the members.'

The Opportunity Center is open Monday to Friday from 10:00a.m. to 3:00p.m., and is located at 420 Magnolia Street in Houma. No referral is required. A hot lunch is served daily at a minimal cost to the participants. This program is funded through contract by the Office of Mental Health.
